SHINO
Visual Kei Costume Designer & Art Director
Inspired by Visual Kei bands, a uniquely Japanese cultural movement.
Visual Kei is a style of Japanese rock bands and musicians characterized by:
“A worldview that emphasizes striking, artistic makeup and fashion as a form of visual expression.” While often associated with dark imagery, religious motifs, and occult elements, the visual expression and musical direction of bands within the genre are diverse, drawing significant influence from subcultures. Globally, Japanese Visual Kei bands are highly regarded, and the term “Visual Kei” is widely recognized.
Self-taught in costume design, SHINO gained attention for dazzling creations that speak directly through visual impact, leading to a career as a designer specializing in stage costumes. With a focus on fetish and gothic styles, SHINO continues to create works guided by an admiration and aesthetic rooted in medieval Europe.
In 2024, following a debut at Fashion Week, SHINO launched a namesake collection, “SHINO.” For SHINO, bringing Visual Kei to the world is akin to reaching beyond the mirror—“opening the door within oneself.” As a designer, SHINO continues to take on the challenge of fully expressing that vision.
