PAPER CRAZY
James Dimech
Maltese designer James Dimech, founder of the wearable art brand PAPER CRAZY, is internationally recognized for transforming paper into sculptural fashion. With roots in architecture and design, Dimech brings the craft of folding to the runway, merging tradition, experimentation, and eco-conscious innovation.
For Milan Fashion Week, PAPER CRAZY unveils eight avant-garde garments. Six of these are constructed from upcycled paper, each exploring the fan fold pleat through six distinct variations — from architectural curves to angular volumes. These pieces were developed in collaboration with the fashion students of the Istituto Italiano Design in Perugia, offering young creatives a rare, hands-on opportunity to engage in experimental couture at an international level.
Complementing these, two garments integrate Cork Paper, Kraft-Tex, and Milk Tissue Paper, innovative materials that embody the brand's sustainable philosophy. Cork Paper, sourced from renewable bark, is lightweight, durable, and biodegradable. Kraft-Tex, made from natural cellulose, is vegan, flexible, and ages like leather. Milk Tissue Paper, often derived from recycled fibers, introduces delicate transparency and softness. Together, they highlight a commitment to fashion that is biodegradable, eco-conscious, and forward-looking.
Dimech has been awarded Maker of the Year 2024 for his groundbreaking work in paper fashion with PAPER CRAZY. His parallel project Paper Grace was honored with the Product of the Year 2024 award, affirming his versatility in both wearable art and ornamental design.
With Milan as its stage, PAPER CRAZY reinforces Dimech's vision of fashion as sculpture,
sustainability as responsibility, and collaboration as the pathway to the future of design.
